How a Solutions Focus has Changed the Way I Work

Last year I attended the Solutions Focus Coaching Training Programme run by Janine Waldman from the UK.

I signed up because the programme promised a pragmatic approach to helping individuals and teams to achieve high performance.

I flew from Perth to Melbourne to be there and wasn’t disappointed.

Solutions Focus provided me with a simple framework to help clients to be absolutely clear about what they really want to change and 100% empowered to focus on actions that are most likely to work.

In a nutshell, Solutions Focus is a practical, positive and highly effective methodology which significantly improves communications for individuals, teams and organisations.

Key features of the Solutions Focus

The Solutions Focus model appeals to me as a facilitator and coach because it provides a:

  • Direct route to desired results
  • Systematic approach to conversations that makes a big impact wherever there are complex issues with people involved
  • Way of creating respectful and lasting change through identifying what works and doing more of it

The emphasis on ‘what works’ was the key for me.

Too often I was getting caught in conversations with clients and workshop participants that went nowhere.

And that’s because they were all about the problems being experienced, barriers they faced and what people didn’t want to see happen

The programme helped me to make the shift to being mega-focused on solutions and doing more of what works.

As Janine emphasised, this is not only enjoyable and empowering, it’s often much faster and more effective than analysing problems, difficulties and their causes.

Her experience has been that it can produce more sustainable results and a lasting shift towards continuous development.

Twelve months on, it’s been my experience too.

I’ve also benefited from applying it in a group context with my facilitation work – and even presented on this at this years IAF Asia Conference in Kuala Lumpur (such a rock star!)
