The real story behind why I’m running a half marathon on Sunday

This news may come as a shock! It is indeed true, I’ve signed up and am ready to run a half-marathon in Melbourne this Sunday.

Why?

Well it’s not a midlife crisis or alpha-male thing. Nor a throw-back to sporting glory days – these were few and far between (I was a very slow back-pocket, played a lot of reserves football and was very good at…tackling. Kicking and handball – not so much!)

It’s actually about…

Family

Yep – family.

My brother in law, Andy, has been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s Disease.

To lots of people this would be a major setback. Interestingly, one of the strategies for delaying the symptoms is to be as physically fit as possible.

Now Andy is no alpha-male either – a very relaxed character in fact, with a love of golf and the couch.

Fortunately his wife, Mandy is simply magnificent – and very fit. Together they’ve set and accomplished a range of challenges that has got them fit, focused and working toward achieving goals (sound familiar?).

Mandy (affectionately known as ‘Coach’ or ‘the Sarge’) reckoned the Melbourne Marathon would be a great way to achieve another goal, raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease and how it can be actively managed.

And so here I am, ready to be part of it, with all the gear and no idea!Run for Parkinsons

Why am I telling you this?

Simply because I’d like your support. Either through:

  • Sharing this through your networks to increase awareness re Parky’s
  • Sponsoring our team (via https://goo.gl/cdCfXM )

Rewards

Additional to the inner glow that you’ll enjoy from supporting such a fantastic cause, I’m also providing 2 x 30 minute coaching sessions* (valued at $500.00) for anyone who makes a donation.

(*Covering either presentation skills, facilitation, community engagement or team development)

PS – I’ll match the total of all donations from my AH&A ‘besties’
