This was a great lesson for me. I was Chair/Facilitator of the National Health and Safety Representatives Forum recently. This annual event brings together Health & Safety Reps (HSRs) from right across the Australian Oil and Gas industry.
We had some great sessions with expert speakers from Australia and overseas. One of the ‘clincher’ sessions was a more casual affair though. And whilst not having the formality of a presenters session, it sure packed a punch!
So what did we do? We simply had an ‘on the couch’ session with three HSRs from varying backgrounds. It was me and three HSRs on the stage, on the couch, with a few key questions to discuss. And it was their flat-out raw honesty that made the session so powerful. Talking about some of the traumatic things they’d seen (many years ago) happen in the workplace and the commitment and changes they’d made as a result. It really brought the safety message home!
To me it truly was a session when we were talking with our audience…not to them!
